MEET Yung
"My story with La Vie actually started about 25 years ago.
A friend took me to La Vie for the first time, and somehow I fell in love with the restaurant. I don’t even remember exactly how the food tasted anymore, but I remember how the restaurant made me feel. It wasn’t big or fancy, and I remember thinking, “This is the perfect size. I could handle a restaurant like this myself.”
I liked it so much that I even asked the owner if he was hiring. I didn’t have any intention of owning it back then—I just wanted to work there so I could learn more about the restaurant. But his daughter told me, “This is a family business. We don’t hire outsiders.” So I knew there was no chance for me.
After that, I went back a few times with friends. Even during the pandemic, I came back. They had tables set up outside, and we sat outside and ate. By then, though, I felt that the food wasn’t the same as I remembered. I didn’t know what had changed, but after that I stopped going.
Then, about three months before I took over, a friend called me and told me that La Vie was looking for someone to take over the restaurant. I was so surprised—and also really happy. I immediately started thinking, “Could I really take over La Vie?”
I asked my friend to tell the owner I was interested and to arrange a meeting. After I learned why he was looking for someone to take over, I made him a promise: if he chose me, I would keep the La Vie name, keep his menu, respect the history of the restaurant, and do everything I could to bring La Vie back to life.
I wanted to make La Vie good again—the way I remembered feeling about it 25 years ago.
Then he called me and told me he accepted my offer.
Now I’ve been with La Vie for a little over two months. I’m still learning, still improving the food, and still trying to make the restaurant better every day. I’m very thankful for all my friends who have supported me through this.
What I really want is very simple. I want my friends, La Vie, and me to grow old together. I want us to have a place where we can keep coming back, enjoy good food, spend time together, and one day look back and have beautiful memories of our friendship and of La Vie."
